Big Steps

Coming upon the big steps, he reached for my hand.
Boldly, he climbed.
At only one, he had grasped a concept that I often miss.
When facing difficulties, get help.
Coming upon obstacles, reach out.
He easily ascended the stairs, clinging to my hand.
On his own, it would have been challenging.
Slower.
How often I want to be independent. Do it alone.
That feels safer. There's less room for disappointment.
And more room for control. Pride. Loneliness.
I want to learn from this small child.
When coming upon challenges, reach out.
And hold on.
The journey's always easier with someone at my side.
"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." Psalm 46:1
